Veneers vs. Teeth Whitening: Which Should You Choose?

Posted on 10/25/2015 by Keith M. Cooper
A woman happy about her new dental veneers. If you're looking for a whiter smile, you might be debating between a few different treatment options. Among the most popular method, include teeth whitening and porcelain veneers. The option that you choose is a personal decision, but learning more about both can help you to make the right choice.

Choosing Teeth Whitening

Teeth whitening is a relatively easy procedure, and it is something that you can do from the comfort of your own home when your schedule allows. The best way to achieve a whiter smile through whitening products is to visit your dentist, as you can have custom mouth guards created to wear at home with a specialized solution. By wearing these mouth guards periodically, you will eventually have a whiter smile.

Whitening may be chosen over veneers because of cost and convenience. You won't need to go through an extensive procedure to have your teeth whitened, and additionally, the cost associated with whitening is significantly less than porcelain veneers.

Choosing Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers are thin shells that are bonded to the front side of the teeth in order to give the smile a cosmetic improvement. Veneers are routinely used in order to correct worn, chipped, and misaligned teeth, but they can also help with stains and discolorations.

There are two main cases in which discolored teeth could benefit from veneers rather than whitening. The first is when the cause of the discoloration comes from deep within the teeth rather than just a surface stain, as whitening will not solve this problem. Secondly, if the problems with your teeth extend past simple discoloration, veneers may also be useful.

For example, if you have other imperfections that you would like to correct in addition to your stains, an investment in porcelain veneers may leave you with a more desirable finished product.
