The Dental Implant Process
Are you excited about the possibility of a lifelong solution for your missing teeth? Dental implants will give you the freedom to smile without shame and live your life without constraints. If you believe this is the right treatment option for you, we’ll help guide you through each step of the dental implant procedure.
Your first visit with Dr. Cooper will consist of a full evaluation of your oral health. He will discuss your treatment options, smile goals, and recommend the best treatment option for your unique needs.
Before starting treatment, our goal is to ensure that you’re comfortable and confident with your decision for dental implants. That’s why we recommend that you come prepared to ask about any unanswered questions you may have. We’ll be more than happy to address your concerns and provide the clarity you need.
Inserting the Fixture
In the first step of the dental implant procedure, Dr. Cooper will surgically insert the fixture in an outpatient procedure by creating a small hole in the jaw. Once the fixture, also known as a titanium post or screw, is secured in the jaw, Dr. Cooper will place a temporary cap to protect the surgical site while it heals.
Recovery and Osseointegration
During your recovery period, the fixture will be given time to acclimate to the jawbone and take the place of your natural tooth’s root. This naturally-occurring process known as osseointegration is a critical part of the dental implant process and will determine the success of your dental implant.
Abutment and Restoration
Once we’ve determined that the implant fixture has integrated successfully, we’ll attach the abutment to the fixture and mount the crown. Dr. Cooper will customize your new crown to match your neighboring teeth, ensuring natural-looking results you won’t be ashamed of.
After your initial consultation, if Dr. Cooper finds that you don’t automatically qualify for implant placement, he might suggest that you undergo a supplemental treatment to help prepare your gums for this restorative procedure.
At Contemporary Dental Arts, Dr. Cooper offers three types of bone graft treatments including autologous bone grafts, allograft, and synthetic tissue. Our San Jose dentist will recommend the best option for you.
Taking care of your new teeth is very important and will ensure that your smile remains healthy. Although dental implants don’t require any special maintenance, it’s crucial that you continue to practice healthy hygiene habits such as brushing, flossing, and using a mouth rinse. Dr. Cooper may also give you a list of post-operative instructions to help you care for your new teeth following treatment.
